Gate Progress 3-1-21
The new Sylva Vista Community Gate is up!
Gate Progress
As
you have probably seen, the new Sylva Vista Community Gate is up!
Remaining operational adjustments should be in place sometime next
week, at which time we will be ready to move forward quickly with the
distribution of gate remotes to all Sylva Vista residents … and GATE
CLOSURE soon after.
As
a reminder, there will be road work done on the pavement just above Don
Davis' driveway where it is buckling. The Davis property is the first
house on the left as you enter Sylva Vista. The work will start at 9
a.m. on Tuesday, September 1st, and should be finished by 3 p.m. the
same day. During most of this time period, the road will be closed to
through traffic - please plan accordingly.
Of course, this will take place only if the weather cooperates. If we
have to reschedule, we will let you know as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please call me at 828 508 2996. Thanks for
your patience!
--Jo Stringfellow, Sylva Vista Road Board
High winds and heavy rains alert:
Severe weather
is forecast for the Carolinas later this weekend and into Monday,
including high winds, heavy rains and an increased risk of tornadoes.
These conditions could also bring significant damage to trees, power
lines and other electrical equipment. We recognize that this is already an extremely challenging
time in our community. And the possibility of storm damage or power
outages on top of everything else is hard to hear.
We also encourage you to take whatever steps you can to prepare for the incoming weather conditions. See
the
DUKE Power website for helpful tips and more information.

ATTENTION Sylva Vista Residents: ALERT
Multiple residents
have been experiencing mailbox theft from the mailboxes located at the
bottom entrance to Sylva Vista. Stolen items include bank statements
and credit card statements, Christmas cards, general mail, and
packages. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating
these thefts. The sheriff's office requests that if you have had mail
stolen to please call (828) 586-4355 to file a report or call (828)
586-1911 to dispatch an officer to the scene.
ROAD UPDATE:
Our asphalt crew will be at the first turn on
Friday October 4 to make repairs to the paved road. We will be able to get
in and out before 11:00 AM and after 4:00 PM. Please be advised and be patient while we corect the issue.
You'll notice, on the first turn into our
neighborhood, we've started a repair on the paved area. There's some
exposed gravel that will be covered with pavement as soon as it settles
enough.
Also, we have paused work on the gravel sections due to extremely dry conditions.
Rest assured we will continue
to grade the entire road system as soon as we get enough rain. Grading in such dry weather is ineffective.
Our Annual meeting will
be Saturday July 6th from 12 Noon to 2:PM. The meeting will be held at
Poteet Park - bring a covered dish!

STORM UPDATE: Hurricane
Irma hit Sylva Vista Community in early September. Computations from
around the area were sustained winds of 50 to 60 mph with gusts of
between 75 to 90 mph. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, wrenched apart
and snapped off by the high winds and mini tornadoes that were spun
off. The tops of power poles were snapped off and the wires and poles
tangled up with trees that came down. In a number of places it looked
as though a bomb had been dropped. Of course the power was out and in
some cases it was 5 days or more before it was restored. Luckily.. and
miraculously.. no houses had any major damage. Read More

ROAD UPDATE: Thanks to Steve Blevins for cleaning out 4 culverts on Parris Branch and to
Tony Tiller for
cleaning up the gullies at the Parris Branch/Basswood intersection.
Believe me, everyone appreciates your hard work. Also thanks to Doug Cody for keeping the entrance to Sylva
Vista mowed and looking good. Also much appreciated! We are hoping to
see Tim Green sometime toward the end of the week. |

ECLIPSE UPDATE:
You may notice a temporary
sign and cable near the top of Paris Branch for eclipse weekend.
It will be taken down next week. The gate is not locked so, of
course, we can access the road. It's a hopeful deterrent
suggested by the police chief since he expected that we could
have 50 or 60 cars coming up Parrish Branch in seaerch of
eclipse viewing areas.

|
ROAD UPDATE:Tim Green came up and checked the road to
see what needs to be done. He will be back at the end of August to begin working on
drainage--ditches cleared out, culverts cleared out and one
culvert near the juncture of Basswood and Parris Branch to be
replaced. It has a large jagged hole in it. He will also grade and put down road bond. |

|
NEIGHBORHOOD
UPDATE: The Sylva Police Dept. has given us a heads up that
we can expect numerous vehicles coming up Parris Branch during eclipse weekend.
People will be trying to get to Pinnacle from our side of the mountain to camp
out at Pinnacle and watch the eclipse.

Last summer's forest
fires have made this a good time to remind everyone of the risks
of burning in wooded areas:
1. Have an up-to-date burn permit.
2. Always burn in open areas.
3. Never leave the burn unattended.
4. Have a water source nearby.
5. Never burn during periods of drought.

Gravel Roads:
The
board has entered into an annual contract with B. H. Graning
Landscapes, Inc., to do annual maintenance each Fall and Spring on the
gravel roads. The Fall work may start somewhere around the second week
in November and the Spring maintenance is to be determined depending on
the weather. Our gravel roads should be in good condition continuously.
